John Lennon's tapes: how Macca saved his marriage with Yoko.

New tapes show John Lennon's anguish over final Beatles and how Macca  saved his marriage with Yoko.

"The Beatles haven't got any magic you haven't got. We suffer like hell anytime we make anything, and we got each other to contend with. Imagine working with the Beatles, it's tough," he said.

"There's just tension. It's tense every time the red light (in the recording studio) goes on."

"Let It Be" was a "strange album" that reflected the friction that had grown between himself and band mates Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

"We never really finished it. We didn't really want to do it. Paul was hustling for us to do it. It's the Beatles with their suits off," he said.

Lennon claimed the photos and other revelations did not come to light because people did not want "a big scandal"."If you couldn't get groupies, we had whores," he claimed. "Whatever was going."There were photos of me crawling round on my knees coming out of whorehouses in Amsterdam with people saying: 'Good morning, John."

The singer also attacked his former songwriting partner and bandmate, Sir Paul McCartney."We got fed up of being sidemen to Paul after Brian Epstein (Beatles manager) died," he said."Paul took over and supposedly led us. What's leading us when you wander round in circles?" (Source BBC)

Lennon claimed the pair's songwriting partnership had ended "around 1962 or something"."All our best work, apart from the really early ones like I Want to Hold Your Hand, were written apart.""It's not fun being a genius," he said. "It's torture."

And despite a well known war of words with Beatle Paul McCartney, Yoko credits Macca with actually saving their marriage.Yoko reveals it was Paul who saved her marriage to John.marriage

That the two were not on good terms and a feud developed after Lennon left the Beatles is well known. Yoko tells The Times: 'I want the world to know that it was a very touching thing that he did for John.

'He was genuinely concerned about his old partner. Even though John was not even asking for help - John, Paul, all of them were too proud to ask anything - he helped. John often said he didn't understand why Paul did this for us, but he did.

Paul asked Yoko what would make her take John back and she told him that if John courted her she would perhaps consider it.

Paul then visited John in Los Angeles where he was living with May Pang, and according to Yoko advised him on how to get Yoko back.

The fact that John immediately tried to court Yoko, and came back to New York, was hugely important she says. He made several attempts to woo her, including taking her to a Man Ray exhibition and to see a film, after she watched him perform at the Elton John concert and realised it could all begin again.
