Crosby was the biological father of the two children Etheridge shared with her ex-partner, Julie Cypher.

Crosby and his wife, Jan, had struggled for years to to have a baby and in 1995, they welcomed their son, Django.
In a 2000 interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes," Etheridge, Cypher and the Crosbys opened up about their families. Etheridge and Cypher spoke about wanting a child when they visited the Crosbys in Hawaii after Django was born, and Jan Crosby proposed the idea that her husband could help.
"I was fortunate enough to get pregnant and have a baby," Jan Crosby said. "And I was holding (Django) in my arms when I heard them talking. And it fell out of my lips. I didn't think about it. I didn't even ask him first. And I was kind of surprised I said it, too. ... I believe I said 'What about David?'"David Crosby quickly agreed.
Beckett Cypher, the son of Melissa Etheridge and her former partner filmmaker Julie Cypher has died. He was 21. Beckett’s death was related to opioid addiction in May 2020.
While Beckett, whose biological father is singer David Crosby, had a high media profile as an infant and toddler, in recent years he and his siblings were photographed relatively rarely.
“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction,” she wrote on Twitter. in 2020. “My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends.
“My heart is broken,” she continued. “I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief. We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now. I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.

Etheridge and Cypher, who met in 1988 during a video shoot, have two children — their daughter Bailey and son Beckett. For several years after their children were born, people speculated about who was the sperm donor for their children. In 2000, the couple revealed it was fellow musician David Crosby.
