Anniversary-Mick Ronson: the short life of Bowie's guitar

By VMZ Staff on April 29, 2021

David Bowie owes the start of his career to  Mick Ronson, died    in 1993.

Ronson (born in Kingston Upon Hill on May 26, 1946 - Death: April 29, 1993) in his youth had been part of a band called The Rats with Mick Woodmansey (future Spiders drummer) and then joined Bowie for a short time to Ian Hunter's Mott The Hoople in crisis to whom David had given his All The Young Dudes which became a hit in 1972 and definitively launched the group.

From behind the curtons, he turned more or less everything he touched into gold, from David Bowie to Lou Reed via John Mellencamp, and dazzled "the hated" Bob Dylan: Ronson had the talent and character to put great artists on the right path, resizing their egos.chapa/badge mick ronson . pin button david bowi - Acquista Musica parecchi a todocoleccion - 153838566

But an insecure  Bowie addicted to drugs, left him in the lurch with the other two Spiders from Mars (Woodmansey and bassist Trevor Bolder), in the middle of the 1973 American tour. So Ronson had to come up with another career and joined Bob Dylan in the Rolling Thunder Revue immortalized on the live album Hard Rain (1976) and Martin Scorsese's 2019 film.

Bowie was looking for an identity until Junior's Eyes drummer John Cambridge introduced him to the boy from Hull, hired as a gardener by his town council, who roamed the pubs with his band and earned the fame of "local Jeff Beck". And the miracle was accomplished: the first fruit of this partnership was "The Man Who Sold The World". The legend of David Bowie began.

David Bowie and Mick Ronson 90s. A bond that lasted a lifetime, even though they were not always together.

Bowie realizes Ronson was the winning horse, and calls him back to London for "Hunky Dory". Mick takes his fellow citizen (and bassist) Trevor Bolder with him, and the ideas sketched by the Thin White Duke offer him the opportunity to take advantage of his background as a classical musician, becoming something much more than just a guitarist. You notice it in the arrangements of "Changes", "Life On Mars?" and “Kooks”, up to the guitar solo of “Life on Mars”, recorded at the first take.

When Bowie, in view of the "space" shows of "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars", proposed a golden stage costume to Ronson, he did not say a word, entered the door and walked to the nearest train station. But then, to return to the fold the next day.

In 1991 Ronson was diagnosed with liver cancer, on April 29, 1993 Mick Ronson died at the age of 46.
