The new song – which is set to feature on their upcoming new album ‘Colorado’ – was announced last month.
Released on Friday, Young said of the new song: “‘Rainbow of Colors’ is a song about the USA and the whole world.” He continued: “The idea of this song is that we all belong together. Separating us into races and colors is an old idea whose time has passed.”

Neil Young has announced a new album with Crazy Horse called COLORADO. It’s set to arrive this October, with the album’s lead single, “Rainbow of Colors,” coming sometime later this month.
In a post on his Neil Young Archives website, the folk-rock legend reveals that the cover was created by his wife, actress Daryl Hannah, using two photographs, plus an original painting by Neil’s daughter, Amber Young.
“[Hannah] used one ‘shadow on a horse’ photograph she had taken and one photograph she had collected and edited, selecting a section and turning it upside down,” Young explains.
“Added to those was a painting my daughter…did a few short years ago. Amber’s painting, shown on its side in the cover, is about 6 feet tall by 3 and a half feet wide [that]…she created, working with wax and colors.”
Neil adds about the painting, “It represents an audio envelope to me. I just love it and always have.”
News of the upcoming album was announced on the Neil Young Archives website, where it’s described as “10 new songs ranging from around 3 minutes to over 13 minutes.” COLORADO is their first record together since 2012’s Psychedelic Pill.
The first track from COLORADO, our next Crazy Horse album, is coming out this month. Billy, Ralphie, Nils and I are all very happy to bring this song ‘Rainbow of Colors’ to you in all its ragged glory, as my original producer and life-long friend, the late David Briggs once said. (sic)”
Neil revealed the new album will feature 10 new songs which range from “around three minutes to over 13 minutes”, and he has also made a documentary about the making of the record.
He added: “10 new songs ranging from around 3 minutes to over 13 minutes, will be coming your way. We hope you love this new album as much as we do.
I have been continuing our work on `Mountaintop Sessions’, the documentary film about the making of COLORADO. It is a wild one folks, no holds barred.
“You will see the whole process just as it went down! Worts and all! I don’t think a film about this subject with the openness and intensity we have captured has ever been seen.
“You can be the judge of that, because Shakey Pictures’ `Mountaintop Sessions’ masterfully shot by cinematographer C.K. Vollick, will be released in over mo theaters world-wide the week our album COLORADO debuts, in October.
The album’s lead single, “Rainbow of Colors”, will be released sometime later this month (no specific date has been mentioned yet). It’s described as being a “ragged glory”. If their reunion show last May was anything to go off of, then that term is definitely a good thing, as the band seemed to be in good spirits about playing together again and penning new music.
