By VMZ Staff on May 1, 2025

A special art exhibition showcasing candid photographs of David Bowie will be held in Poole.

The exhibition, named 'Canvas to Canvas', will be hosted by Canvas Gallery from Friday, May 9 and will feature photographs of David Bowie taken by his lifelong friend and backing vocalist, Geoff MacCormack.

Geoff added: "We’re very exclusive when choosing venues for our exhibitions.

"These photographs were taken in a private, personal setting for David, so it’s fitting that we display them in intimate venues where they can be truly appreciated.

"It’s wonderful to bring the magic of David Bowie back to Dorset after performing here over 50 years ago."

‘Canvas to Canvas’ is free to attend and unveils at Canvas Gallery, 17 Haven Road, Canford Cliffs, Poole, BH13 7LE on Friday, May 9.

The event marks nearly 52 years since Bowie's performance at Winter Gardens Bournemouth on May 25, 1973, with Geoff on percussion and backing vocals, Bournemouthecho reports.

The exhibition will run until Saturday, May 17 before moving to Canvas Gallery Winchester from Saturday, May 24 to Saturday, May 31.Geoff MacCormack David Bowie

More than 25 candid images of the legendary musician will be on display, all captured between 1973 and 1976.

Geoff MacCormack met Bowie at school in Bromley, London, when the pair were just eight years old.

After forging a close friendship, Geoff went on to join Bowie on tour as backing vocalist, percussionist and dancer, while recording on six of his albums and co-writing music.

Geoff said: "These photos are a wonderful way to remember David.

"As one of his closest friends, he gave me an attitude in these shots that a professional photographer wouldn’t get.

"They’re real, honest and mark some of the most iconic moments of his career."

The photographs on display will include various limited-edition prints, all signed by Geoff and some signed by David Bowie, as well as two silkscreen prints by British-American artist, Russell Young.

All prints will be available to purchase, with prices ranging from £195 to £2,000 for limited editions.
