The song is titled after the film and will play during its end credits. Both Cave and Dessner are credited as co-producers on it alongside Luis Almau, while Dessner composed the film’s score.
First of all, I think it should be known that “Train Dreams” has always been, like, my favorite book. Whenever I’m asked about books, “Train Dreams” always comes up. It’s a little like (Cormac McCarthy’s) “Blood Meridian” or something to me, just a perfect piece of literature, and especially powerful because it’s a novella — it’s just a short and beautiful thing. So I’ve always had a deep attachment to that book. I know the main actor, Joel Edgerton — he’s an Aussie — and I think he just texted me and asked if I had any interest. And I didn’t really have any time to do it, so it’s quite something. I had all sorts of misgivings about it.
I also do scores myself, and the last thing anybody who’s done a score for a film wants is for the producers to come in and dump some song at the end of it that doesn’t relate to the score, just to have a kind of rock song at the end. It happens to us all the time when we do scores; it’s unbelievably insulting. And I didn’t really want to do that to Bryce. But I saw and just really, really loved the film. I thought that they did a remarkable job of capturing this beautiful gem of a novel. But still, I was hesitant about sticking my nose into Bryce’s score. (Read the full article on Variety)
It appears on the film’s official soundtrack, which will be released digitally on November 7 and on vinyl on November 14. Train Dreams will then premiere on Netflix on November 21.
Directed by Clint Bentley, Train Dreams is an adaptation of the novella by Denis Johnson and stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who “leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century”.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis to score new TV adaptation of ‘The Death Of Bunny Munro’
The first two episodes will be previewed at Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival, and feature a Q&A with Cave and Matt Smith
The series was officially announced by Sky and will come as a new adaptation of Cave’s second novel, which was published in 2009 and followed on from his 1989 debut, And The Ass Saw The Angel.
The upcoming six-part series will see Matt Smith (House Of The Dragon, The Crown) in the titular role. The plot centres around a sex-addicted door-to-door salesman who, after his wife’s death, takes his young son on a chaotic sales tour around Brighton and beyond. The journey forces him to confront what kind of man and father he really is. (NME report)
It is written by BAFTA winner Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy), directed by Isabella Eklöf (Industry, Holiday), and produced by Clerkenwell Films in association with Sky Studios. Now, it has been confirmed that the novelist and musician behind the story will be joining forces with Ellis once again for the score.
It follows them working on previous projects, including The Proposition (2005), The Road (2009), Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022), and the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black (2024).
All new music for the series was recorded at Soundtree Music in Shoreditch, east London, and engineered by Luis Almau – a frequent collaborator of Cave and Ellis. The sound of the new material leans into a raw, unruly energy, according to Sky, and captures the signature emotion and intensity that the two have demonstrated in their previous work.
There will also be a special preview event for The Death Of Bunny Munro taking place at the Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival. It will be held at the Royal Festival Hall on October 30, and feature a screening of the first two episodes, followed by an exclusive on-stage conversation with Cave and lead actor Smith.
