Paul McCartney grabbed a guitar and tore through the tasty riff of “Let Me Roll It” before pushing his band into a stomping snippet of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.” It rocked.

McCartney indulged in some nostalgia, but he spent more time rumbling through high volume, big energy rock – “Junior’s Farm” and “Get Back” and “Band on the Run.”

McCartney gets an absurd amount of respect. He might deserve a bit more.

People gleefully crow about Willie Nelson and Keith Richards’ immortality, but forget that McCartney will be 80 next week and still fills and thrills stadiums with two and a half shows – he booked Fenway for back to back dates Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday night , for 2 hours and 40 minutes — an amount of time that seemed incredibly generous and yet somehow also way too brief.

More specifically, he took us back through a setlist of 36 thoughtfully curated selections, including 21 from the Beatles’ run through the ’60s and seven by his ’70s band Wings.

Of the 36 songs he plays 21 Beatles' songs, while another is his heartfelt tribute to Lennon: 1982’s “Here Today”, written in the wake of his old friend’s murder in 1980, and delivered here with devastating sincerity. He even makes room for a pre-Beatles song, “In Spite Of All The Danger”, which McCartney wrote in 1958 and was the first tune ever recorded by The Quarrymen. (Independent reports)

When Sir Paul first played Fenway back in 2009, he was a mere 67 and performed 34 songs. Tuesday night, the 79-year-old played two more in a set that ran from 1958 Quarrymen obscurity “In Spite of All the Danger” to songs off 2018 album “Egypt Station,” from rock to just about everything else.

He did twangy-heavy folk (“I’ve Just Seen a Face”) and protest folk (“Black Bird”). He did a huge blustery ballad that defined a ’70s sound (“Maybe I’m Amazed”) and proto-new wave art rock (“Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five”). He did songs for people on acid (“Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”) and people enjoying a second glass of white wine (“My Valentine” for wife Nancy, who was in the audience).

In typical fashion, McCartney’s first Seattle show in six years was a 2.5-hour stroll through the superstar’s extensive catalog of solo material, choice Wings cuts and Beatles classics, which includes some of the most enduring songs in popular music history.

While there was undoubtedly a nostalgia factor for the many baby boomers in the house, it wasn’t entirely a night of throwbacks. McCartney joked about how the sea of cellphones that lit up for every Beatles hit go dark whenever he plays a new one. “Women and Wives,” a standout off his savory pandemic album “McCartney III,” might not have been a crowd favorite by comparison, but perfectly suits the huskiness in his voice these days. The tour will mark some other firsts and landmarks for Macca, who will make his live debut in three cities — Hollywood (FL), Knoxville (TN) and Winston-Salem (NC) — as well as his first gigs in Fort Worth, Texas and Baltimore, Maryland since 1976 with Wings and 1964 with the Beatles, respectively; he’ll also play in Oakland for the first time in 20 years.
