Nei quattro anni trascorsi dall'uscita delle edizioni deluxe di "Revolver" dei Beatles, non c'è stato molto dibattito su quale fosse il desiderio principale della maggior parte dei fan: un trattamento analogo per "Rubber Soul", l'album che precedette "Revolver" nella discografia del gruppo a metà degli anni Sessanta. Dopo una breve attesa, quel desiderio sta per realizzarsi: il 2 ottobre, infatti, UMG e Apple Corps pubblicheranno remix, edizioni estese e cofanetti per celebrare il classico del 1965.
«Come facevamo sempre, noi quattro ci sedevamo insieme e discutevamo su come chiamare il nuovo album. Esaminavamo diverse possibilità prima di approdare a qualcosa che, a nostro avviso, racchiudesse bene il nostro stato d'animo di quel periodo. Poiché ci avevano sempre affascinato i doppi sensi – come nel nome del nostro gruppo, The Beatles – ci venne in mente *Rubber Soul*. Ci piaceva il fatto che richiamasse le tendenze musicali moderne e, allo stesso tempo, contenesse un riferimento ironico alla suola delle scarpe».
È davvero sorprendente pensare alla svolta intrapresa dai Beatles nel 1965, dopo tre anni di successo senza precedenti come band pop. McCartney la definisce «la nostra nuova musica». E tutto questo avveniva dopo una serie di grandi successi, da "I Want to Hold Your Hand" a "Help!" e "A Hard Day's Night".
Ciò che ho trovato notevole, come sempre, è la qualità eccelsa del remix. I fan più accaniti troveranno forse qualche dettaglio da ridire, ma la nitidezza e la ricchezza del suono conferiscono a *Rubber Soul* nuova vita. Certo, ci sarà chi preferisce la versione del 2009, ma ho apprezzato molto il lavoro svolto qui da Giles Martin. Il cofanetto include anche la registrazione mono di *Rubber Soul*, che – oserei dire – sarà la versione preferita dalla maggior parte degli appassionati.

Il produttore Giles Martin e il tecnico del suono Sam Okell hanno collaborato nuovamente per realizzare nuovi mix stereo dei brani originali dell'album, oltre a un singolo a doppio lato A contenente due importanti canzoni dello stesso periodo non incluse nell'album: "Day Tripper" e "We Can Work It Out". Molti fan accaniti apprezzeranno il fatto che, a differenza delle pubblicazioni di "Revolver" del 2022, "Rubber Soul" beneficerà di un remix in Dolby Atmos curato da Martin e Okell disponibile in formato fisico; tuttavia, questa volta la versione Atmos sarà distribuita come uscita autonoma, anziché far parte del cofanetto CD.
Quanto agli scarti di lavorazione delle sessioni originali, ne sono stati raccolti 24 nell'edizione più completa in uscita a ottobre: "Rubber Soul: Special Edition Super Deluxe". Tale cofanetto includerà complessivamente 68 brani, sia che i fan scelgano il formato in vinile a cinque LP, sia quello in CD a quattro dischi.
