Downtown, Paul McCartney played his third and final club show of the week at the Bowery Ballroom, capacity 498. There were a few celebrities — Larry David came in with Guy Oseary, I talked to comedian Aziz Ansari. But the distinct feel of this show was that was for fans, or as McCartney called him from the stage, “connoisseurs.” After he took the stage with his band that even included a horn section, the always Beatle acknowledged that some in the standing audience had slept outside in 30 degree weather for these rare tickets.
He opened with the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night,” and pounded through a set that showed the range of his remarkable career. In succession came the Wings hit, “Junior’s Farm,” plus “Temporary Secretary,” “Let Me Roll It,” “Let “Em In,” and so on. I’m not sure if it was lost on the audience that “Junior’s Farm” — fifty years old — contains a lyric that resonates today:
I took my bag into a grocer’s store
The price is higher than my time before
Old man asked me why is it more?
McCartney has changed the set a little bit each night. We were lucky: after explaining this was not a “request show,” he added my particular favorite, “Every Night.” He also included a tribute to George Harrison, poignantly strumming “Something” on ukulele.
Another highlight was McCartney solo performing “Now and Then,” the song John Lennon left behind which McCartney and Ringo Starr released last year. In his stadium shows, Paul and the band play with the video that was made. But tonight it was just Paul, and it was clear he was emotional when he asked for applause for Lennon.
There were several emotional moments, in fact. Talking about his mother after executing a glorious take on “Let it Be,” McCartney held back tears. He also reveled in the account of how “Blackbird” came to be after the Beatles refused to play to a segregated audience in Jacksonville Florida in 1966.
The second show was packed of stars: Anne Hathaway, Cara Delevingne and Emma Stone were just a few of the stars lucky enough to attend night two of McCartney's impromptu Bowery Ballroom residency.

Hathaway, 42, appeared makeup-free as she emerged from the concert carrying a beige coat over one arm.

Delevingne exited the unforgettable gig with her close pal Danielle Haim of the rock band HAIM.
The supermodel, 32, looked effortlessly stunning in a black leather jacket over a white T-shirt and flared jeans.
Danielle made her way out of the venue's side door wearing a sporty jacket, black pencil skirt and heeled boots.
Both ladies appeared to be carrying Paul McCartney tote bags that contained a rolled up poster and other collectibles from the concert.
Stone brought her mother Krista Stone as her plus one to Wednesday night's show.
The Oscar-winning actress, 36, looked ultra chic in an all-black outfit that included a trench coat and miniskirt.
She kept her new auburn-toned pixie cut hidden beneath a black beanie cap.
Stone held onto her mom, who was dressed in a black jacket and jeans, during their swift exit from the concert.
Hollywood icon Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson turned out for the celeb-packed concert in NYC.
Hanks and Wilson, surrounded by bodyguards, were dropped off outside the venue in Manhattan by a chauffeured car.
Hanks looked sharp in a blue velvet blazer styled with a patterned scarf and skinny trousers.
Jerry Seinfeld was also among the celebrity attendees.
The comedian, 70 — whose wife just spoke out amid rapper Kanye West's disturbing anti-Semitic rants — was seen leaving the venue eating a slice of pizza.
He shielded himself from the downpour with his hand as he made his way to a nearby car.
Seinfeld wore a gray blazer over a T-shirt and jeans for the exclusive show.
Amy Schumer bundled up in a colorful jacket and a striped beanie as she attended McCartney's concert with her husband Chris Fischer.
The couple put on an animated display for photographers waiting outside the Bowery Ballroom as they made their exit.
