The singer-songwriter said in a new interview that Clapton had signed a guitar for him and gave it to him as a present when Sheeran was visiting his home. Sheeran has previously spoken about Clapton being an icon of his; the pair have since become good friends.
Ed Sheeran revealed, on 'Hot Ones', an anecdote about a guitar that was given to him a few years ago by Eric Clapton.
The 30-year-old British singer-songwriter, like many other musicians, has always had 76-year-old Clapton among his musical idols. Sheeran got to know him and now the two have become friends. In the name of this friendship, Clapton gave him one of his guitars, complete with an autograph signature.
The instrument, as you can imagine, is among Sheeran's most prized possessions, but he nearly lost it in a fire that broke out in his recording studio.
This is Ed's story: "My hero is Eric. I listened to" Layla "when I was 11, I got a guitar and went from there. I met him in 2015 and have become friends ever since. I went to his house , he took a guitar off the wall and gave it to me. He signed it on the back and said, 'Keep my guitar.' I was amazed, 'Cool!' It was the only guitar in my studio at home, I was in tour. The person in charge of my house called me and said, 'Your studio is on fire', and I thought, 'Fuck! There's the guitar in that studio.' "
.
Fortunately for Sheeran, the guitar Eric Clapton gave him was saved from the flames even though it suffered some damage. The English singer-songwriter further explains: "It has been totally restored, but now it smells like burnt. But it sounds great, it sounds amazing, it actually smells amazing and still has Eric's signature. This is my favorite guitar. ".
