Dave Grohl: "I think Jimmy Page is my favorite soloist."

By editorial board on May 21, 2022

During an interview with British magazine GQ, Grohl mentioned the guitarist  who are among his all-time favorites

After being asked what his favorite guitar solo was. One of the two musicians mentioned (Ry Cooder is the other one) is his favorite soloist, while the other has released his favorite album of all time.

Here is what the 53-year-old American musician replied: “I think Jimmy Page is my favorite soloist.

I love the way he is always poised on the brink of total chaos, but knowing how to place each note in the place where it can arouse great emotion.

When you watch a movie like 'The Song Remains the Same', or any live footage from 1971 or 1973 or 1975. Even the first few things, he just does it.

It's the kind of courage that I respect more than anything in musicians. Not perfection or any kind of clean technical expertise. I really enjoy seeing musicians push themselves to the point of collapse. He did it in the best way. ".

Grohl played live with Led Zeppelin guitarist when the Foo Fighters, in 2008 at Wembley Stadium in London, invited Jimmy Page and the other Zeppelin John Paul Jones to join them on stage.

First-Ever John Bonham Biography (Foreword By Dave Grohl)Hachette Books has set a September 7 release date for "Beast: John Bonham And The Rise Of Led Zeppelin", the first-ever biography of  John Bonham.

BEAST: JOHN BONHAM AND THE RISE OF LED ZEPPELIN is the first-ever biography of the iconic John Bonham, considered by many to be one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) rock drummer of all time. (Hachettebooks)

Bonham first learned to play the drums at the age of five, and despite never taking formal lessons, began drumming for local bands immediately upon graduating from secondary school.

By the late 1960s, Bonham was looking for a more solid gig in order to provide his growing family with a more regular income. Meanwhile, following the dissolution of the popular blues rock band The Yardbirds, lead guitarist Jimmy Page sought the company of new bandmates to help him record an album and tour Scandinavia as the New Yardbirds. A few months later, Bonham was recruited to join the band who would eventually become known as Led Zeppelin-and before the year was out, Bonham and his three bandmates would become the richest rock band in the world.

In their first year, Led Zeppelin released two albums and completed four US and four UK concert tours. As their popularity exploded, they moved from ballrooms and smaller clubs to larger auditoriums, and eventually started selling out full arenas.

Throughout the 1970s, Led Zeppelin reached new heights of commercial and critical success, making them one of the most influential groups of the era, both in musical style and in their approach towards the workings of the entertainment industry.

They added extravagant lasers, light shows, and mirror balls to their performances; wore flamboyant and often glittering outfits; traveled in a private jet airliner and rented out entire sections of hotels; and soon become the subject of frequently repeated stories of debauchery and destruction while on tour. In 1977, the group performed what would be their final live appearance in the US, following months of rising fervor and rioting from their fandom. And in September of 1980, Bonham-plagued by alcoholism, anxiety, and the after-effects of years of excess-was found dead by his bandmates.

On 24 September 1980, Bonham was picked up by Led Zeppelin assistant Rex King to attend rehearsals at Bray Studios for a tour of North America, to begin 17 October in Montreal, Canada – the band's first since 1977. (Wikipedia) During the journey, Bonham asked to stop for breakfast, where he drank four quadruple vodka screwdrivers (16 shots between 400 and 560 ml, also equivalent to 9–13 American standard drinks). He then continued to drink heavily after arriving at rehearsals. The band stopped rehearsing late in the evening and then went to Page's house, the Old Mill House in Clewer, Windsor. After midnight on 25 September, Bonham fell asleep; someone took him to bed and placed him on his side. Led Zeppelin tour manager Benji LeFevre and John Paul Jones found him unresponsive the next afternoon Bonham was later pronounced dead at 32 years old.

The inquest on 27 October 1980 showed that in 24 hours, Bonham had consumed around 40 shots (1–1.4 litres) of 40% ABV vodka, after which he vomited and choked (a condition known as pulmonary aspiration). The finding was accidental death.[24] An autopsy found no other recreational drugs in Bonham's body. According to Rolling Stone, Bonham had recently overcome a heroin problem and was taking an unspecified medication for anxiety and depression at the time of his death.  Bonham's remains were cremated and his ashes interred on 12 October 1980, at Rushock parish church, Worcestershire.[25] Rather than replace Bonham, Led Zeppelin chose to disband out of respect for their deceased bandmate. They said in a press release on 4 December 1980: "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were."[25][28] It was signed "Led Zeppelin."
