Ringo Starr: 'I made all my mistakes on stage'

Ringo Starr talks Beatles, Barry Keoghan and country music
The Beatles drummer has released a new, solo album - and it's Americana and country music

"Call me Ringo." That's what the former Beatles drummer says when BBC reporter (Regan Morris) asked if we should call him Sir.

He joins us at the swanky Sunset Marquis hotel in West Hollywood where rock stars have gathered for decades in a luxury oasis behind the Sunset Strip.

We're here to talk music – specifically Ringo Starr's new country album, Long Long Road.

But first we deal with the honorifics because although he was knighted in 2018 for his services to music, technically, he says, it's wrong to call him Sir Ringo because he's actually "Sir Richard."

Sir Richard laughs. He just wants to talk music, and he's not worried about formalities or titles. His new album is more Nashville than Los Angeles and he seems more LA than Liverpool as he encourages an American interviewing a British national treasure for the BBC to just relax.

"Peace and love," he says, a soothing catchphrase often used by the 85-year-old music legend who looks, moves and sings like a much younger man.

"I've always loved the attitude of LA," he says, adding that he's had a home here since the 1970s.

"Besides, I love the heat and the light, it's just been a good place for me." (read the full story on BBC)

Ringo Starr has assembled a characteristically stacked list of collaborators — including Sheryl Crow, Billy Strings, and St. Vincent — for his next album, Long Long Road, out April 24.

The former Beatles drummer announced the record Tuesday, March 3, and also shared first single, “It’s Been Too Long,” featuring backing vocals from Molly Tuttle and Sarah Jarosz. The track nods to some of Starr’s recent country influences — the low, resonant guitar riffs, Tuttle and Jarosz’s high-and-lonesome harmonies — while also incorporating some atmospheric elements of psychedelia and early rock & roll.

Long Long Road will arrive just over a year after Starr’s last album, Look Up, which also featured contributions from Strings, Tuttle, Lucius, and Larkin Poe. Both Look Up and Long Long Road were produced by T Bone Burnett.

“I’m blessed to have T Bone in my life right now and working with me on these records,” Starr said in a statement. “After we did the last record, which I love listening to, this one just sort of happened. I like to say sometimes I make the right moves, like you can go left or right at any point, and one of the right moves was hooking up with T Bone for Look Up, and now for this one, which I’m calling Long Long Road, because I’ve been on a long long road.”
