“I do want to say that there is a controversy about Ringo Starr’s drumming,” the producer-emcee said. “The question is, is he a great drummer, or is he the greatest drummer?”
That issue has probably long since been settled for most of the dozens of friends, family and guests who made it to Beverly Hills Garden Park Monday on the occasion of Starr’s 85th. It was not just his percussion skills being extolled, of course. As Burnett told Variety backstage, “You know, Ringo is an extraordinary force for good in the world. There’s nobody like him — nobody creating more good will than Ringo Starr.”
Sir Ringo launched the event in 2008 and it has expanded to involve gatherings around the world.
“I am getting overwhelmed, there are so many of you now, we started with like 50 people in 2008,” he said on stage.
“(I am) truly grateful that you all turned up today otherwise I’d be lonely – all I do is say peace and love.
“That’s all I’m doing and we’re going around the world, now we’re in 35 countries, most of them have gone back to bed.”
