Robert Redford, the leading man with the golden-boy looks who won an Oscar   godfather for independent film as founder of the Sundance Film Institute, has died. He was 89.

Cindi Berger, the chief executive of the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, shared the news in statement to the New York Times. She said Redford had died in his sleep early Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, but did not provide a specific cause of death.

The actor-turned-director — who had a stellar run in such films as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Way We Were,” “The Sting,” “Three Days of the Condor” and “All the President’s Men” — had worked less frequently both in front of and behind the camera in recent years.

His last on-screen acting job was in “Avengers: Endgame,” in which he reprised his role as Secretary Alexander Pierce and joined several other Marvel vets such as Michael Douglas and Tilda Swinton.

Robert Redford, the longtime Hollywood icon and star of classic films such as 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and 1985's Out of Africa, has died. He was 89.

According to The New York Times, Redford died at his home in the mountains outside Provo, Utah, on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 16. No cause of death was given, but Rogers & Cowan PMK chief executive Cindi Berger told the outlet in a statement that he died in his sleep.

A leading Hollywood heartthrob at his peak in the 1970s, Redford had talent to back up his good looks. His decades-long career earned him a best actor Oscar nomination for 1973's The Sting, the best director award for 1980's Ordinary People and another best director nomination for 1994's Quiz Show.

"I've spent most of my life just focused on the road ahead, not looking back," Redford said in the acceptance speech for his 2002 honorary Oscar. "But now tonight, I'm seeing in the rearview mirror that there is something I've not thought about much, called history."
