After nearly three years on the market, knighted rock star Rod Stewart and wife Penny Lancaster have finally sold Wood House, their historic and conspicuously opulent longtime country estate
Sir Rod put Wood House in Essex on the market for £7.5 million in 2016, but struggled to sell the sprawling estate, with his wife Penny Lancaster blaming Brexit for the lack of interest.
The six-bedroom manor home has seen Sir Rod, 74, through two wives and several girlfriends and includes a boating lake, tennis courts, a swimming pool and huge gardens.
By November 2016, he had cut the price by £550,000 and he further reduced it to £5.95 million in early 2018.

The 28-acre property contains six bedrooms, including a master suite that offers a view of the countryside, a fireplace, rain shower and Clive Christian-designed closets. The stately luxury of the Stewart ‘s house is matched by the surroundings. Outside is a walled rose garden complete with parterre, topiary and fountain; other formal gardens, a brick-and-steel pergola and a row of trees called the Lime Walk. The property also includes a swimming pool, boating lake, tennis court and a full-size soccer pitch.
“Rod and I have found ourselves affected by the recent property stalemate thanks to Brexit,” she told the Daily Mail
. “We can’t sell our old place in Essex, the Wood House, despite its unique architecture and strong historical links. The hike in stamp duty hasn’t helped: It almost stopped me in my tracks when I recently invested in an apartment just down the road from our new Essex home.”
Rod Stewart has a grandiose foyer with handsome carved wood staircase leads to a 30-foot long drawing room with an elaborately detailed plaster ceiling and a carved stone fireplace with an over-mantel that dates to the early 1600’s. A smaller sitting room makes for more cozy gatherings and the baronial dining room features a gold-leafed ceiling and leaded glass bay windows with stained glass inserts.
