The Syd Barrett Estate launches official YouTube channel for late Pink Floyd legend

By editorial board on May 12, 2023

"The channel is a natural extension of Syd Barrett’s existing online presence and will consist of artistic interpretations of his solo music, with accompanying music and lyrics.

Together with the Swedish animator, Alex Teglbjaerg, known as The Artist on the Border, there will be new animated music videos released on an ongoing basis. It will initially focus on the solo songs which originally appeared on An Introduction To Syd Barrett (2010)."

Peter Barrett said on behalf of the family: “There isn’t all that much filmed Syd Barrett out there.

"You’ve already seen most of the material and the few bits that pop up are quickly placed in the digital public domain. We want to take his quirky and poetic lyrics and translate them into images." (Music-News)

Meanwhile, the documentary, 'Have You Got It Yet? The Story Of Syd Barrett And Pink Floyd', is heading to cinemas in the UK on May 15.

Syd Barrett Documentary Have You Got It Yet? to Explore Pink Floyd’s Troubled Genius.
The Story Behind The Song: “Have You Got It Yet?” Imagine being taught a new song only to have it be ever changing,

Pink Floyd’s original, troubled frontman is the subject of Mercury Studios new documentary, Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. Co-directed by Roddy Bogawa and late Pink Floyd graphic designer Storm Thorgerson.

Syd turned up with a song he entitled “have you got it yet?”, and played it to the other members of the group. They thought it to be a good number and started playing along but it quickly became apparent that every time they came close to learning it, Syd would change the time, the key, the arrangement. Each time they got close to learning it, he would pull this switcheroo and start playing the new version, all the while singing “Have you got it yet?”. In the end, they gave up, safe in the knowledge they would never learn this tune. (Medium Corporation US)syd

He’d play it for them again, and once again it would change, until they realized that Barrett was changing the song each time he played it. The clue was right there in the title of the song: it was all an elaborate madcap prank.

That's exactly what happened in early 1968 right around the time David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd. Gilmour had been a friend of Syd Barrett since childhood, and had become very aware of Barrett's progression into a hermetic lifestyle.

Eventually, they realized Barrett was having them on, and years later, Waters — during an interview he did for The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story — said that he didn’t really enjoy Barrett’s little joke. He put down his bass, left the room, and never attempted to play with Barrett again.

He did, however, call what Barrett had done “a real act of mad genius.”

“Have You Got It Yet?” was recorded  only on a demo version by Pink Floyd or by Syd Barrett. (is not clear)

Have You Got It Yet? features interviews with three other members of Pink Floyd (Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and David Gilmour), plus Barrett’s sister Rosemary Breen, Pink Floyd managers Peter Jenner and Andrew King, The Who’s Pete Townshend, Blur’s Graham Coxon, MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden, and one of the greatest playwrights of the last 50 years, Tom Stoppard, who used Barrett as a symbol of the promises and disappointments of the 1960s in his seminal 2006 play, Rock ‘n’ Roll.
