Their album Hackney Diamonds bested the Black Crowes’ Happiness Bastards, Fontaines D.C.’s Romance, Green Day’s Saviors, Idles’ Tangk, Jack White’s No Name, and Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter.
Accepting the trophy on the Rolling Stones’ behalf was Andrew Watt, the producer behind Hackney Diamonds. “Talked to Mick yesterday and he just wanted to say a big thank you to the Academy from the entire band,” he said. “For a little boy that grew up playing guitar, it was one of the most amazing experiences to be around those musicians.” Watt also shouted out the engineer who worked with him on Hackney Diamonds, as well as Pearl Jam, whose recent album, Dark Matter, he also produced.
Hitting Number 1 in 19 countries on release, Hackney Diamonds marked the return of The Rolling Stones as their first original studio album since 2005’s A Bigger Bang.
The Rolling Stones are regarded as one of the greatest bands in the history of music, so it’s surprising that they have only collected three Grammys from 12 nominations. Even more surprising, none of their classic albums – including Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. – even received a nomination. The Stones were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy before earning a traditional Grammy. They eventually took home two awards in 1995 thanks to Voodoo Lounge, and another in 2018 for Blue & Lonesome.
