Townshend Blasts Fan for Song Request, Daltrey Makes Him Play It

It's well known that The Who don’t take requests during their concerts, a fact Pete Townshend made emphatically clear to one fan during the group’s concert in Tampa Bay.

Roger Daltrey instead has one song who hates to sing live.

The band were a little more than halfway through their set when technical issues arose.

A rendition of “I Can See for Miles” was cut short because singer Roger Daltrey was unable to hear the rest of the musicians in his monitor.

After technicians took a few minutes attempting to solve the problem, Daltrey and Townshend returned to their respective microphones, but seemed a little unsure of which song would be next. At that point, one apparently loud fan in the front row suggested “Naked Eye.”UCR reports.

“Just shut up,” Townshend replied. “Just shut the fuck up with Naked fucking Eye, alright? We don’t do fucking requests. However many times I see you, and I love you, you fucking paid for my Ferrari, I’m sure.”

After a moment of laughter and applause from the crowd, the rocker looked to Roger Daltrey and asked him what he wanted to play. “Anything you’d like,” the singer replied, before suggesting “Naked Eye.”

“You’re gonna get me to play 'Naked Eye' after all that?” the guitarist responded, eliciting a smile out of Daltrey. Sure enough, Townshend then proceeded to switch guitars and perform the song, originally released on 1974’s Odds and Sods.

Being a rock star seems like the perfect job to many people, once you’ve been doing it for 60 years, like The Who frontman some aspects of the role begin to grow tiresome after such a long period.

Daltrey’s job is to ensure everybody who has paid to see The Who leaves with a brimming grin. Therefore, he needs to appease the masses by delivering the band’s biggest songs, including one particular number he’d happily never sing again.

The song in question is ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, one of The Who’s most beloved anthems and a prerequisite of every show they play. However, judging from his remarks, it seems the frontman would rather do anything but perform the track, which according to the man himself, leaves him “bored shitless”.

Unfortunately for Daltrey, his opinion on the song is far outweighed by the adoration held by their fans towards ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, meaning he has to put his feelings to the side. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Daltrey said of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again‘: “That’s the only song I’m bloody bored shitless with. I don’t know why, but I’m being honest.”

So, don’t expect to hear Daltrey to deliver the iconic scream in “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” for the next concert at Royal Albert Hall.

“I’m not gonna do the scream,” Daltrey insisted during a recent conversation with Billboard. “I’m gonna get the fucking audience to do the scream. I’ve done that scream for 55 years, and I’ve had enough of it. I don’t even want to try it now; it’s brutal on the vocal cords. They can do the scream, and I’ll do everything else. I’m more into singing these days. At the age of 80, I think I deserve to be.”
