To decide if it is worth spending this money, we did some tests.
We also compared the vinyls with a 24-karat gold-plated Original Master Recording CD which, at the time, was the best an audiophile could get.
While Tommy's recording was actually already very good when it was first released, we must to admit that these Half Speed Remasters are something quite remarkable. Provided, however, that you have at least a decent hi-fi system.
Now to hear (and listen) the differences of this new recording, it is not necessary to have Hi End systems, just have a mid-range turntable, a good cartridge, cables just bit better than the electric strips of the bed light, two dynamic speakers with bass reflex, even if only two-way.
To make it short, a normal stereo system, makes the job, We listened to the record on two different hi-fi systems: a Hi End and a normal combat system. The result is clear: I would spend this money again.
As a turntable we used this scottish Ariston Audio, with a Grado Cartridge and Sme arm. We changed cartridges and the result was the same: perfect sound! Another arm was the Mayware IV: Very complicated to set but absolutely the best
One of the most important albums of all time, Tommy is a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind boy, which, when released in 1969, reached #2 in the UK charts and #7 in the US. The 2-LP album. It is packaged in the original triple-gatefold sleeve with the 12-page full-colour libretto.
Recently last June Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ take on the 1969 work boasts a mix of Tommy classics and deep cuts, including “Pinball Wizard,” “There’s a Doctor,” and “Go to the Mirror!” The song also arrives with a music video directed by frequent Tenacious D collaborator Liam Lynch, who also directed the band’s 2006 film, The Pick of Destiny.
Tenacious D are honoring the Who with a new medley featuring songs from the band’s classic rock opera, Tommy. The song is out digitally now but will also get a special seven-inch vinyl release, with all proceeds from vinyl sales benefitting Everytown for Gun Safety.
“Who better to deliver a tribute to the greatest rock opera of all times? Who? The D! That’s Who!! We’ve been working on this medley for 20 years. It’s finally ready to be unleashed. Crank it. It’s a humdinger. Enjoy,” the duo said in statement.
The band are releasing a 7 inch vinyl version of the medley, with all proceeds going to to Everytown For Gun Safety, an organisation that touts the collective goals of finding ways to make communities safer by introducing solutions to help end gun violence. You can pre-order it here.
