A star-studded line-up has sparkled for two London concerts paying tribute to Jeff Beck. Johnny Depp and Rod Stewart are featured on the line-up of guest performers.Sir Rod and Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood united on stage at the Royal Albert Hall to pay tribute to their pal Jeff Beck, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
The pals, who played together in The Faces, were at the Royal Albert Hall to perform in memory of their talented friend, who they said helped them in their careers. The rockers spoke to the crowd and remembered the guitarist.
The two Jeff Beck tribute concerts scheduled for May 22-23, 2023, at London’s Royal Albert Hall have added even more wattage to their all-star lineups. On March 30, the news was shared that Ronnie Wood and Joe Perry were also going to perform.
Other artists who have reportedly expressed their interest to be involved include Clapton, Johnny Depp, Billy Gibbons, Imelda May, John McLaughlin, Robert Randolph, Olivia Safe, Rod Stewart, Joss Stone, Gary Clark Jr, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.
Also to perform, from the Jeff Beck Band, are Rhonda Smith, Anika Nilles and Robert Stevenson.
Guitarist Jeff Beck, whose full name was Geoffrey Arnold Beck, died back in January at the age of 78 after contracting bacterial meningitis.
Jeff Beck’s funeral service was held on February 3. Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page described him in the eulogy he gave as “the quiet chief”, according to comedian Jim Moir (aka Vic Reeves) who was in attendance.
Beck reached a postumous goal at 2023 Grammy Awards for a guest spot on Ozzy Osbourne’s 2022 album Patient Number 9 in a category that nearly eluded him his entire career.
Several Beck songs earned Grammy Awards nominations over the years, but not the ones you might expect. Signature songs such as “Beck’s Bolero,” “I Ain’t Superstitious,” “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” and “You Shook Me” (side note — Beck cried over Led Zeppelin’s version) missed Grammy nods. Beck earned 16 nominations and eight wins across 11 ceremonies. He won three times in 2010: Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals (“Imagine”), Best Pop Instrumental Performance (“Nessun Dorma”), and Best Rock Instrumental Performance (“Hammerhead”).
Beck’s nomination for Ozzy’s song “Patient Number 9” came in a category that surprisingly eluded him for nearly his entire career. Ozzy Osbourne has scored his highest charting UK album of his 42-year solo career with ‘Patient Number 9.’
He and Osbourne earned a nomination for Best Rock Performance. Or put more simply — the best rock song with vocals. “Patient Number 9” nomination is just the second time Beck earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance. He and Joss Stone picked up a nod in 2010 for their cover of “I Put a Spell on You.” They lost to The Black Keys song “Tighten Up.”
Beck was never a singer, but he featured guest vocalists on plenty of his albums. Rod Stewart sang for the Jeff Beck Group, for instance. His 2022 album with Johnny Depp, 18, featured the actor’s singing. Yet the 2023 Grammys will be just the second time Beck’s name appears in the Best Rock Performance category.
