Founding member of The Who Pete Townshend announced that Starkey has now returned to the band. And in light of the latest news cycle, an unreleased recording featuring Starkey, his father Ringo Starr, Elton John, and more is again making the rounds online.

Earlier this year, Zak Starkey shared a cover of T. Rex’s 1972 single “Children of the Revolution” to his Instagram page. Apparently recorded for an unannounced charity album, featured appearances from Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, along with Elton John and Starkey’s father, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.
“Duff [McKagan] and I went in a local studio and cut bass for a cover of T-Rex[‘s] ‘Children Of The Revolution’,” he wrote.
According to Starkey, The Who and Guns ‘N’ Roses have decided to collaborate on a cover of the T.Rex classic ‘Children of the Revolution’, after performing on the same bill at Rock In Rio. The drummer did not share the exact details, but the two bands did perform on the same bill at the festival back in 2017, so it is likely that this project has been in the works for some time.
“My dad played drums in LA (while I fudged the bass) then in Rio, Duff cut bass. A couple of weeks after the tour we cut guitars in NYC with Slash – sent the track with sshh guide vocal to Elton who played amazing piano.”
The son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, Starkey has followed in his father’s footsteps to become a notable rock and roll drummer in his own right, first learning his craft from Keith Moon. Over the years, he has worked with the likes of Oasis, Johnny Marr, and The Lightning Seeds. Most famously, the drummer has also been performing with iconic mod rockers The Who since 1996. Unsurprisingly, Starkey seems to have amassed a pretty impressive address book.
Starkey continued: “Sssh went to hang with Axl [Rose] who said he’d like to sing it – wow! – Axl killed it – amazing vocals.”
He went on to reveal that the track was currently being mixed, saying the final record would be auctioned off for the Teenage Cancer Trust – of which The Who’s Roger Daltrey is an Honorary Patron.
It’s unclear when this cover of ‘Children of the Revolution’ will be released to the public. As Starkey explained, though, the record will be auctioned off in the aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust once it is finished.
“Produced by me n sshh it’s a full album with more than one Beatle, a Smith a Pretender, an Ashcroft, an Iggy and many more."
