Victoria Monét has unleashed her sophomore album, Frequency of Love, via Lovett Music/RCA Records.
The 22-track offering was preceded by the No. 1 R&B single “Let Me,” followed by the house-tinged “Reach Out” and yacht soul-inspired “Juicy.” For her second full-length album, Monét enlisted some of the biggest names in R&B and pop, including Bruno Mars, SZA, Bryson Tiller, Leon Thomas, Lucky Daye and Chlöe, plus her daughter Hazel Monét.
Speaking on Frequency of Love, Monét told The Associated Press, “I’m really, really, really passionate about love. A lot of it was just reflective of what I was going through or feeling while dating. The album covers many bases, including love for my daughter, love for the world, what I want to see for it.”
Beneath the various wavelengths of love explored on the album is a heartfelt letter to music. Several samples and interpolations baked into the project pay homage to the decade-spanning love songs that came before her. The opening track, “All I Need,” gives a nod to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s 1968 hit “You’re All I Need to Get By,” written by Ashford & Simpson. Meanwhile, “Come Back To You” samples The Isley Brothers’ 1977 classic “Voyage to Atlantis.” Taking a trip to the ‘90s, “Head To Toe” samples Joe’s “All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do),” while “Almost” flips Brandy’s “Almost Doesn’t Count.”
